Mian Zhong and Chong Wen

Mian zhong and Chong Wen are Chinese schools in Medan. they were established in 1930s and 40s in Medan. These Chinese schools are known as the Red school, with Red China ideology. This is opposed to Su Tong which was a Blue School, pro China nationalist.

Su Tong was established in 1926, while Mian Zhong was established in 1945. Chong Wen was established in 1955. They were all established by local overseas Chinese in Medan.

In particular the Middle and High Schools were well known as most Chinese from outer cities came to study.

In 1966, the red schools were closed down because of anti Chinese movement.

” at the beginning of 1966, the Mianzhong school had not been closed. We saw thugs writing “Ganjang cina”, “gantung cina” horror slogans with red paint along the way to school, and painted them on the buildings. These left a deep and unforgettable memory. On March 26, 1966, the school finally could not hide its fate of being closed. Thousands of students lost their school and the opportunity to learn Chinese culture.”

Su Tong remained as Sutomo.

Now recently, they are being reopened, mainly funded and organised by Alumni.

“Mianzhong” was founded by a local overseas Chinese in 1945. It has a high reputation in Indonesian Chinese society. It has trained students all over the world. It was closed in 1966 due to external reasons.

In 2016, “Mianzhong Education Foundation” was established and the school was reestablished in 2018. http://www.gqb.gov.cn/news/2018/0716/45140.shtml
