NEDERLANDSCHE HANDEL-MAATSCHAPPIJ (NETHERLANDS TRADING SOCIETY)
Principally a financial institution, carrying on a large general banking business, the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij, or Netherlands Trading Society, may be said to be one of the principal organizations that have made the Dutch East Indies what they are to- day. It owns or supervises many thou- sands of acres of plantations in Java, and since 1824 has been in the forefront in connection with the trade of the islands.
Its paid-up capital is G. 55,000,000, and its annual profit is usually about G. 5,000,000. In the Batavia section of this volume appears a comprehensive article dealing with the firm’s extended business relations.
Its head office for the Far East is at Batavia, Java. The Medan branch, which is under the management of Mr. R. N. W. Rikkels, was established in 1914, and occupies well installed offices in the Juliana House building.
The 1915 balance sheet showed an authorized capital of F. 30,000,000 fully paid up and a reserve fund of F. 7,812,701.77, with a special reserve und of F. 601,333, figures which indicate a very healthy state of affairs. The ex- tension of the bank’s operations has been marked by great progress. The personnel at present numbers no less than 4oo.
